It's one of the world's great cycle touring trails — and a new small-group tour offers the chance to give some of it a go without having to camp and carry all your gear.
Perth's Declan von Dietze recently completed the Munda Biddi mountain-bike trail, which stretches 1000km through WA's South West from Mundaring to Albany, in the record time of four days, six hours and 39 minutes.
But if you're up for exploring the trail at a slightly more relaxed pace, WA company Inspiration Outdoors — which specialises in small-group walking tours on trails around Australia — is launching a new multi-day, fully supported cycling tour on the Munda Biddi.
The new tours follow the model Inspiration Outdoors has developed for its walking tours, which are designed for people who want to hike through spectacular landscapes without having to carry all their gear or camp each night.
On the Munda Biddi Trail, cyclists usually need to carry heavy panniers and either camp or stay in the shelters provided. But Inspiration Outdoors will transport riders to and from local accommodation each day, meaning they can sleep in a comfortable bed, enjoy a home-cooked meal and a shower each evening, and carry minimal gear while riding.
The new six-day Munda Biddi Bike Tour will cover a 224km section of the trail along WA's south coast from Albany to Walpole. Accompanied by guides, riders will cover 28-56km each day across varied, moderate terrain, carrying only a small day pack. They will stay one night in Albany, three in Denmark and one in Walpole.
Set to depart in November this year, as well as March and November 2018, the tour costs $1750 per person (single supplement $250) and includes transport from Perth, all food and accommodation, and bike hire if required.
