Food and wine lovers can enjoy the varied flavours of WA's south at the upcoming Taste Great Southern.
From canapes on an island in Albany's King George Sound to a gourmet feast cooked on a giant barbecue, there's no shortage of unusual foodie experiences at this year's Taste Great Southern festival, which is on throughout the region from March 23 to April 9.
The series of events aims to celebrate the outstanding produce and wines of the region.
Highlights will include two events with pop-up dining experience Fevor. The first is a picnic on Breaksea Island in King George Sound, featuring local beer and wine plus canapes made with native ingredients, along with a scenic helicopter ride. Then there will be the Camp Oven Cook Up, a 10-course degustation dinner on a farm just outside Albany.
Other stand-out events will include the Junkyard Feast, hosted by Anna Gare with guest chefs David Coomer (Fuyu), Scott Brannigan (Bread in Common) and Guy Jeffreys (Millbrook Winery), and featuring food cooked on a giant barbecue in what promises to be one of the festival's most unusual settings, Wilson Machinery in Torbay.
Other guest chefs at the festival will include Colin Fassnidge (of Sydney's 4Fourteen), who will be involved in events including a Sundowner Soiree at the Lake House Denmark and the Albany Food and Wine Festival on April 8.
On the drinks front, events include a whisky masterclass at Albany distillery Limeburners, coffee workshops and a selection of wine tastings, including two introduction-to-wine-tasting sessions at Singlefile Wines, near Denmark.
Among the festival's free events are tours and tastings at Silverstream Wines near Denmark, the Rockcliffe Night Market, and the Taste of Dumbleyung event on April 1.
For those who can't make it to the Great Southern, there will be some satellite events in Perth, including a guided Limeburners tasting at Como The Treasury, a Great Southern wine market, and Taste of the Great Southern feature menus at restaurants Post and Petition Kitchen.
