Small-ship cruising, travel insurance and train journeys were among the myriad topics up for discussion at our first event for Travel Club Gold Members yesterday evening.
Thirty keen travellers attended our first Meet the Team event, which was free for Travel Club Gold Members, at Seven West Travel Club's home in Osborne Park yesterday.
After a cup of tea and some sandwiches, Travel Editor Stephen Scourfield kicked off proceedings with a discussion about how he thinks about the world and chooses which destinations and topics to cover, providing a behind-the-scenes insight into the work of Travel Club's team of writers, photographers and videographers.
He discussed new and emerging destinations that have caught his interest, including Iran, Ethiopia, Central Asia's Five Stans (including Uzbekistan, pictured above), as well as old favourite such as Italy, the Greek Islands and India.
Stephen was then joined by travel photojournalist Gemma Nisbet and travel columnist Jan Bromilow to answer questions from the group, covering everything from where to go on the east coast of the US in December to travelling by train around Italy, how to get travel insurance to cover pre-existing medical conditions and suggestions for adventurous small-ship cruises.
The perennial issue of single supplements for solo travellers was also up for discussion, alongside topics such as the value of travel agents, travelling in Central America, security in Europe, travelling to Antarctica and different ways of flying to the US.
There were also questions about Stephen's upcoming India: Golden Triangle With Udaipur tour, which is being presented by Travel Club in partnership with Wendy Wu Tours and departs on November 18.
The next Meet the Team event will cover cruising, and will be hosted by Jan and travel photojournalist Niall McIlroy, on September 8. Niall and an insurance specialist will discuss all things travel insurance at a Meet the Team event on October 6, while Stephen will join Aviation Editor Geoffrey Thomas for an Airline Insights and Updates themed instalment on November 10.
All of our Meet the Team events are free for Travel Club Gold Members, but are limited to just 30 attendees.
